Great, even Play-Doh is toxic!

Great.. my little boy loves Play-Doh and apparently he is playing with arsenic, lead, and PVC by-products which can leach into his skin and cause kidney damage and cancer, among other things. Gotta love the great US of A where corporations only care about the mighty dollar. Here's what Play-Doh had to say about this:

What are the ingredients in PLAY-DOH compound?
The exact ingredients of PLAY-DOH compound are proprietary, so we cannot share them with you. We can tell you that it is primarily a mixture of water, salt and flour. It does NOT contain peanuts, peanut oil, or any milk byproducts. It DOES contain wheat.

PLAY-DOH compound is non-toxic, non-irritating & non-allergenic except as noted: Children who are allergic to wheat gluten may have an allergic reaction to this product.

There is no MSDS sheet required for PLAY-DOH compound.

BLOG #12 – FINAL BLOG

My parting words to you all:

"Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, thoroughly used up, totally worn out & loudly proclaiming ‘WOW! What a ride’!"

This epitaph is on my Dad’s gravestone and I live by it because life is just too short to not do all of the awesome things you have your heart set on doing. (CARPE DIEM is my second favorite motto..)

Reflect back on this semester.

*Have you met anyone new who is important to you? Have you rekindled any old friendships that have made you stronger?

*Have you experienced any major changes academically or personally?

*What is your one BEST or FAVORITE memory of this semester?

*How will you live your life to the fullest?

A parting quote from Fast Food Nation:

“Nobody in the United States is forced to buy fast food..Pull open the glass door, feel the rush of cool air, walk inside, get in line, and look around you, look at the kids working in the kitchen, at the customers in their seats, at the ads for the latest toys, study the backlit color photographs above the counter, think about where the food came from, about how and where it was made, about what is set in motion by every single fast food purchase, the ripple effect near and far, think about it. Then place your order. Or turn and walk out the door. It’s not too late. Even in this fast food nation, you can still have it your way.” (Schlosser, 270)

“Seek first to understand, then to be understood.” –Stephen Covey

1) Reflect upon what you read in Chapter 11 of Thriving in College. What does this quote mean to you or how can you apply it to your life?

2) (Refer to page 380 of the text):
Are you a “Crisis Tickler,” “Withholder,” “Irritator,” “Blamer,” or “Gunnysacker?” Explain.

HAVE A WONDERFUL THANKSGIVING BREAK AND ENJOY LIFE, FRIENDS, & FAMILY!!

Hypocrisy is a funny thang.

So, my Mom's in the hospital as you know and the Doctors keep stressing how important nutrition is in order for her skin to heal. However, her hospital meals consist of hamburgers, pork roast, beef stew, etc.. to name a few. I have been preaching about FFN for months now and she's obviously listened because when I was there last week she berated her Dr. for feeding her "poison, chemical-ridden red meat" and kept saying "Give me other proteins like peanut butter and beans!" Go Mom!

BLOG #10 - due by MIDNIGHT 11/17/08!

"Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world."--Nelson Mandela

Chapter: 11 - please answer the following question on your Blog.

"Who are the people in your life that you tend to turn to for social support when you are experiencing stress or need personal encouragement?"
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

READ the following excerpts from your classmates' Mid-Term exams on how they approach studying and retention of information from textbooks. These are extremely successful and their grades are reflecting it. If you haven't cracked your Anatomy textbook especially, you are doing yourself a great disservice!

"Steps that I take include skimming over the chapter, analyzing the preview & questions about the chapter, read headlines and depict the bold terms in context. When I do a reading assignment, the very first thing I do is flip through the pages and look for visuals that would enhance my comprehension of the chapter. I read the preceeding paragraph or overview of the chapter and try to answer the questions as I follow along in the context..then look up bold terms to understand their definitions. By knowing the highlighted words, it's easier to understand what the chapter is actually about. When I cover all these necessary steps, it is easier for me to complete a reading assignment and feel prepared for an upcoming quiz or test."

COMMENT: WOW!

"First I read the title, subtitles & objectives. I find that it's helpful to highlight them just to help reinforce the idea of what I'm learning. I quickly (and sometimes subconsciously) review in my head anything I might already know about the subject; that way I can try to find a connection of my previous knowledge to what I'm going to learn. If I think anything in the piece will be important for me to know or find quickly in the future, I take notes on the side about it or underline/highlight it. When I'm finished with the piece I look it over (my notes & highlighting) to help keep the main ideas fresh in my mind."

COMMENT: Brain-based research reveals that eliciting previous knowledge allows the brain to retain information more effectively. Nice!

"I glance through the entire chapter and skim through the main paragraphs and read the first sentence. I always look at and read the objectives of every chapter. They come in very handy towards the end, that way you know if you have successfully completed the reading. I try to be as active as possible during reading because it helps me comprehend the information easier and this way I am retaining the information more than once."

COMMENT: Active learning (taking notes in margin/highlighting )is way more powerful than passive learning (just reading).

"If I am doing a reading assignment such as the Chemistry one provided I found it helps a lot if I put it into my own words because the scientific terms can be confusing. I highlight what is important and then write notes in a notebook. I also write the page # down next to what I took notes on just in case I want to refer back to the page. Sometimes I have to read the more complex articles more than once or at least until I can filter them into my own words."

COMMENT: Wow! Putting reading excerpts into your own words helps the brain to create a connection and therefore, retain the information longer. Writing the page #'s in your notes is something I never thought of doing before but what an efficient way to re-visit info! Yes, sometimes you will have to read more than once. A lot of students are lazy and won't do this - good for you!

THIS WEEK'S BLOG IS JUST READING. YOU'RE DONE! :)

Blog #9 - due by MIDNIGHT 11/10/08!

CONGRATS! You made it over "slump time" and now things should start to go smoother and be less intensive as the semester wraps up.

1) What are you most stressed-out with at the moment? Why? Is your body re-acting to this stress? Devise a plan to deal with it.

2) FFN: Chapter 8 / This is a creative writing exercise! Read the following scenario and finish it based on your knowledge after reading Chapter 8.

You are "Raul" and have just immigrated to the American West illegally from Mexico. You brought your wife and two young children with you on a frightening and expensive 4-day journey in the back of a beat-up truck to arrive in Texas. You can't find work there and Border Patrol is cracking down, so you decide to migrate north a bit where you have relatives in Colorado. You are hired on the spot by ConAgra to work in one of their "beef processing" plants.

-Describe in sensory detail your place of employment. (What's it look like, what is going on, how do people act, what do you wear, what is your job? etc..)
-How much $$$ do you earn?
-How do your days go? What are your work hours and what do you do after work?
-Where do you live, what do you live in, how is your quality of life?

Anyone eat a burrito from Holiday lately? Check this out.. I dare you.

Check out this LIE from the manufacturer.. I guess "highest quality ingredients" is synonymous with carcinogens such as propylene glycol (petroleum, i.e. OIL product), nitrites, sodium aluminum sulfate (fertilizer), oleoresin (plastic derivative) etc..
As always, the shorter the list of ingredients, the better the food is for you. :)

"Don Miguel Hand Butcher Wrapped burritos are 7 oz. burritos filled with the highest-quality ingredients inside a hand-stretched tortilla. Sold in a variety of flavors for Breakfast. Available at your closest convenience store or in the cold deli section of your grocery store."

BLOG #8 - due by MIDNIGHT 11/3/08!

**Go to a classmate's blog and answer the TWO questions s/he formulated in response to last week's #2:

"Develop two reflection questions that you would ask your students at this point in the course if you were a UN100 Professor."

So, you will be going to another classmate's blog, cutting & pasting their #2 from last week and answering those questions on your own blog.

THAT'S IT! :)

BLOG #7 - due by MIDNIGHT 10/27/08!

1) Post your favorite lyrics, poem, or quote for this week.

2) Develop two reflection questions that you would ask your students at this point in the course if you were a UN100 Professor.

3) What are you passionate about? Why?

4) How are you going to finance your three years of the Radiology program? If you will be in debt from student loans at the end, calculate roughly how much you will owe upon graduation.

5) Have you changed your mind or do you have any new concerns about your program of study after our guest speakers today (Dr. Foley & Joanne)? Are you thinking of a different major or are you dead set on Radiology? What behavior(s) will you maybe have to change in order to keep up with and make the cut?

6) FAST FOOD NATION (You should be reading through Chapter 7 at this point)

Reflect upon the opening lines of Chapter 7:

"You can smell Greeley, Colorado, long before you can see it. The smell is hard to forget but not easy to describe, a combination of live animals, manure, and dead animals being rendered into dog food."

-Have you ever read The Jungle by Upton Sinclair? If so, how does it relate to FFN?
-How high is the employee turnover rate in the meat industry and why don't the packing plants see this as a problem?

We discussed captive supplies of cattle versus regular farming. Reflect upon this quote from page 150:

"To supply the beef slaughterhouse, ConAgra operates a pair of enormous feedlots. Each of them can hold up to one hundred thousand head of cattle..During the three months before slaughter, they eat grain..The grain fattens the cattle quickly, aided by the anabolic steroids implanted in their ear."

-Do you think that these animals' emotions (fears, stress, anger) affect the meat we eat derived from them? How?

-How do you feel about eating steroids via consumption of "USDA Inspected" beef?

I probably grossed you out - sorry guys, but knowledge is power! If you still don't see the connection between this course and Fast Food Nation -- let me know. Most of you are going into health professions and will be dealing with epidemics of cancer, diabetes, heart disease etc.. mostly based on the American sedentary and processed-food lifestyle. I am hoping you are thinking more critically about everything at this point.

"Our greatest glory is not in never failing but in rising every time we fall."
--Ralph Waldo Emerson--

There are two parts to this short Blog:

1) Post a response to the classmates' blog (paper strip) that I assigned you, on his/her page. At the bottom of this, you will find a complete address list of everyone's sites.

2) Reflect upon one tactic we discussed in class this week concerning Procrastination, Study Habits, Retainment, or Test-Taking/Anxiety. (Choose something that you will probably try and discuss why).

I'm a product of society...

I was bad today - I ate at Hardee's for lunch. Why? Because I only had 25 minutes for lunch AND thickburger combos were only $2.25 -- see, they lured me in with all of this convenience and thrift!

It tasted good (and should since it's mostly chemical) but I honestly couldn't finish the burger. I kept wondering what the tiny lumps in the meat were. Grizzle? Antibiotics? Fat? Dirt? Fur?

KFC $10 Challenge...

Who has seen this new KFC ad on TV? What do you think of it..?

If you haven't, it basically shows a mom and her kids trying to buy groceries to fix a meal at home for under $10 and then shows a meal at KFC with side dishes, all for "under $10." Yea, that's great, but how can you compare a meal full of toxic poisonous fats and chemicals to home-cooked, less processed meals?

Honestly, I can feed my family a healthy meal for under $10 -- it just takes a bit of dedication and time.. which of course, no one has anymore.

Anyways, I thought this new commercial was interesting. What are your thoughts?

BLOG #5 - due by MIDNIGHT 10/6/08!

What do you feel this course (UN100) should focus on? What do you need help in, specifically?

Please write at least one paragraph focusing on your specific academic needs. That's it - have a great week!

It's almost Halloween, so I figured I'd scare you.

Remember - moderation is the key.

Most U. S. beef cattle are implanted with synthetic hormones in feedlots prior to slaughter. On January 1, 1989 the European Economic Community (EEC) placed a ban on hormone-treated U. S. meat, preventing U. S. meat products from being sold in any European nations. The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) has challenged the ban and accused the EEC of unfair trade practices, but the action of European governments raises some important questions about American meat.

Q. Why did the Europeans (EEC) place a ban on hormone-raised meat?

A. The European Economic Community banned hormone-raised meat because of questions on the dangers of meat that has been treated with synthetic sex hormones. European consumers pressured the EEC to take this action to protect their health.

More than a decade ago, Roy Hertz, then director of endocrinology at the National Cancer Institute and a leading authority on hormonal cancers, warned of the carcinogenic risks of estrogenic additives which can cause imbalances and increases in natural hormone levels. Hertz warned against the uncontrolled use of these potent carcinogens. No dietary levels of hormones are safe and a dime-sized piece of meat contains-billions of millions of molecules.

"Worst combo meal" according to MSN.com

McDonald’s Deluxe Breakfast
1,360 calories
64 g fat (22 g saturated)
2,325 mg sodium
160 g carbs
49 g sugars

Saturated fat equivalent: 22 strips of bacon

With four vehicles for refined carbohydrates (biscuit, hash browns, hotcakes, syrup), this “deluxe” disaster will send your blood sugar soaring.

When I was downstate this summer I saw a mom get one of these meals for each of her four kids who were like 10 years old and under. Nasty!!

Blog #4 - due by MIDNIGHT 9/29/08!

BLOG #4 – due by midnight 9/29/08

Ø What is your plan to get involved on campus? What are your interests? Will you or have you joined any student organizations? Which two events besides UNITED & Career Major Fair do you plan on attending?

Ø Fast Food Nation - Chapter 6:

Ø What are some of the problems facing cattle ranchers?

Ø What are “captive supplies” of cattle? (“The four major meatpacking companies now control about 20 percent of the live cattle in the U.S. through ‘captive supplies’” (138). (See also p. 142).

Ø What was the impact of the Chicken McNugget on the poultry industry?

Ø How does the nutritional value of a McNugget compare to a hamburger?

Ø How does the suicide rate for ranchers and farmers compare with the rate for U.S. citizens in general? Why?

Ø Do you feel as if there is any healthy fast food available to consumers? If so, where and why? Give specific examples of products.. Please be honest and support your opinions. For example, I feel that Subway's Veggie Sub is extremely healthy due to its freshly-cut produce, cheese, and fresh-baked breads. I actually talked to a friend who works at Subway and he said in MQT, they slice their own produce. (My fear was that it arrived pre-sliced and filled with preservatives). It's not organic, but it's a start.

BLOG #3 - due by MIDNIGHT 9/22/08!

“Only the educated are free.” –Epictetus

As always, please cut and paste this into your own Blog (#3):

Ø Describe your ideal Instructor/Professor.

Ø “I knew it when I studied it, but I forgot it on the test.” How can students study differently to prevent this from happening?

Ø How do you study for quizzes/tests?

Ø What do you have trouble with on quizzes/tests?

*Please go to the website listed below, which is a "Letter to McDonald's" from a former employee. Read it and write at least a paragraph reaction on your Blog site.

http://www.aboutmyjob.com/main.php3?action=displayarticle&artid=3141

Also, read this short excerpt-- I was shocked:

For coffee drinkers, it would seem fairly safe to just grab a quick cup of coffee at McDonalds on the way to work. But many health conscious people would object to it also including this list of ingredients: sodium phosphate, sodium polyphosphate, Di-Acetyl Tartrate Ester of Monoglyceride, sodium stearoyl lactylate, tetra sodium pyrophosphate, sodium hexametaphosphate, sodium citrate, and carrageenan.

http://rinf.com/alt-news/culture/surprise-ingredients-in-fast-food/1654/

(This website is used only for citation purposes - you don't have to go there, unless you want to. Caution: It's scary!)

Thanks Natasha!! Paris hamburger excerpt..interesting!

On the other hand, in Paris, hamburgers are now the "in thing." Chef after chef commented on how the taste is forbidden and subversive — so everyone wants it. Chefs are busy analyzing the gastronomic characteristics of the American burger — including soft sesame buns, pickles, onions, tomatoes and cheese. It appears that some chefs have even come to the United States to experience the "burger culture." The French are having it "their way" though:

-with pickles, fleur de sel (sea salt) and fresh thyme

-wagyu (Kobe) beef with black ketchup (made with blackberries and black currants)
topped with foie gras

-with a sesame bun, toasted on the sesame side, brushed with butter on the soft side

-with smoked bacon, lettuce, pickles, mustard, mayonnaise and a side of fries (for $56 US)

In 2002, the United Nations' World Health and Food and Agriculture Organizations met jointly to address the global obesity epidemic (now termed "globesity"). Worldwide there are more than 1 billion overweight adults, with at least 300 million deemed obese. It is thought that the obesity epidemic is driven by societal changes and behavioral patterns of communities — along with worldwide nutrition transitions, globalization of the food market, and reduced physical activity. Some scientists predict globesity will outstrip infectious disease deaths by the end of the decade.

Note: Both times I was in France I was homesick so I went to McDonald's. They really are different though because they have mostly salads, the burgers were tiny and tasted extremely salty and gross, and they also sell beer & wine. There was no super-sizing (back when it still existed here) and the only size of fries available was "Small." What does this say about America?

If you've seen Reservoir Dogs, they really do have the "royale w/cheese" :)

The 11:05 enigma..

Can someone please enlighten me as to why each week at around 11:05am, a different dufus walks into our classroom, wanders around, and then just sits there and doesn't notice that a) there is a full classroom and b) that we're in the middle of a class!? Are people really that oblivious? ;)

BLOG #2 - due by midnight 9/15/08

“Go as far as the eye can see, and when you get there, look farther.”

**Don’t forget to leave me 1 comment on here (click on “comment” below next to “posted by mmesimon”)

**Don’t forget to scan a random classmate’s Blog and leave a comment.

Ø Reiterate a term or concept you learned in Anatomy this week.

Ø List a few pleasant events that happened during your first weeks at NMU.

Ø Where do you want to be (academically) in six months?

Ø List habits you already possess that make you successful in college.

Ø List habits (timewasters?) you can change or modify, or need to lose.

Ø Explain how you approach studying your a) textbook and b) notes.

Ø Explain how you determine what to write down in notes during lectures.

Ø FAST FOOD NATION:
Ø Watch this short 1980’s McDonald’s commercial. McD’s reps have actually claimed they do not target children in their ads.. Pay attention to the tagline: “The Hamburglar is very clever and very sneaky!” Why is this ironic?

Ø Over the last several decades, fast food companies have aggressively targeted children in their marketing efforts. Should advertisers be permitted to target children who lack the sophistication to make informed decisions and are essentially being lured into eating high fat, high calorie food through toys and cute corporate mascots?

BLOG #1 -- due by midnight 9/1/08

(YOU SHOULD CUT & PASTE THESE QUESTIONS INTO YOUR OWN BLOG)

Ø List your own quote, favorite saying, song, or other expression of your feelings today.

Ø Now that you made it to NMU – why are you here?

Ø How did you choose this school?

Ø List initial observations of your new environment.

Ø List initial observations of your classes.

Ø What observations have you made about other students?

Ø About your instructors?

Ø What do you think will be your biggest challenge(s) academically this semester?

Ø Finally, name one goal (personal, academic, etc..) you have for yourself next week.

Welcome to UN100!!!

Bonjour!

I chose to teach UN100 because I was first in my family to graduate from college and didn't have any positive role models while I navigated through high school and college (except for my awesome French teacher!). When I first arrived to the NMU campus in the Fall of 1988, I was lost and I almost failed my first semester. I feel that most students are told to "go to college" but really don't know what that entails. I have dedicated my career to these types of students. I look beyond appearances and love to interact with different types of people. I taught high school French and English for 10 years before moving back to Marquette. I'm currently a Counselor for Upward Bound. I love teaching - it's what I do, and my "at-risk" students are the closest to my heart. I just finished my Master's degree in Secondary Education, and I am so excited to pass on my knowledge. Oh, and I LOVE to snowboard -- been doing it since high school!

Now that you are here at NMU, it's time to reflect upon your goals and expectations. Why are you here? Why did you choose the CLS major? What are your career aspirations? How will you get there?

Yes, yes, this is a lot to ponder in the first week but something you must focus on.

These are hypothetical questions, please proceed to Blog #1 which is due by midnight 9/9/09...
